Locher: Make national security transformation a priority
The American people are going to demand that Congress make progress on the major problems confronting the nation. One exceedingly dangerous problem is the archaic national security system which is incapable of handling the challenges of the 21st century. The Democratic and Republican leaders on Capitol Hill should make national security transformation a bipartisan priority. They should create Temporary Select Committees on National Security Transformation to prepare an agenda for congressional action. The congressional leadership should seek to partner with the Obama administration to jointly address the long overdue redesign of the national security system. Secretary Gates has called national security transformation the “institutional challenges of our time.” Congress must give it the priority it deserves.
